Driving tips in Odesa
Historic Odesa is a grid of nineteenth-century streets with one-way traffic and almost continuous paid parking; on Frantsuzkyi Boulevard and in Arkadia you spend longer looking for a space in summer than driving. A compact sedan such as a Mazda 6 or Toyota Camry is more practical here than a big SUV, although the cobbled descents to the port reward extra ground clearance.
Zatoka is 65 km away via Ovidiopol and the estuary bridge, the Akkerman fortress in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi 55 km, the Shabo wineries 60 km, and Vylkove in the Danube delta about 230 km. In July and August the road to Zatoka backs up on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon, so set off early.
The summer season on the coast
Zatoka, Serhiivka and Karolino-Buhaz have little usable public transport in summer, and a minibus stops being an option with two suitcases and a child. The seven-seat Hyundai Staria is $120 a day and $70 on the 26+ day rate, deposit $1,000, child seat free.
Fortresses, estuaries and wineries
The Akkerman fortress in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, the Shabo wineries and the Kuyalnyk estuary add up to one long day behind the wheel. A comfort-class sedan handles it well: a Toyota Camry or Kia K5 at $75 a day and $50 on the monthly rate.
