Driving tips in Ternopil
The city is small and you cross it in 15 minutes: Valova Street and Teatralna Square are pedestrian, and traffic is organised around the lake. There is one bottleneck — the embankment, where in warm weather no parking spaces are left in the evening, so it is easier to park on the streets above and walk down.
Leaving the city: Zbarazh Castle is 20 km away, Berezhany 50 km, the Pochaiv Lavra and Kremenets 70 km each, Chortkiv 75 km, and Zalishchyky with the Dniester canyon about 120 km. The regional axis is the M-12 towards Khmelnytskyi and Lviv; the turnoffs to the canyon are unpaved for the last kilometres and soften after rain.
Pochaiv and Kremenets in one day
The Pochaiv Lavra is 70 km away and the Kremenets hills the same, so with the drive home the route comes to about 160 km — half of one day's allowance. For a group of six to eight the Mercedes-Benz Vito Tourer at $110 beats two separate cars.
The Dniester canyon and Zalishchyky
Zalishchyky is about 120 km away and the best viewpoints over the canyon sit at the end of unpaved turnoffs. All-wheel drive earns its keep: the Mazda CX-5 is $60 a day and $35 on the 26+ rate, the Kia Sportage $75 and $55.
