Traffic Rules in Ukraine for Foreign Drivers: What You Should Know Before Your Trip
Traffic rules in Ukraine are similar to those in Europe, but there are a few specifics that visitors learn only on the road. This guide will help you avoid fines and unpleasant surprises.
Documents You Must Have in the Car
- Your passport and driver’s license. If your license is not in Latin script, you must also have an International Driving Permit (IDP).
- Vehicle registration certificate and compulsory third-party liability insurance (OSCPV) — provided with the car.
- Rental agreement: it states that you are authorized to drive this vehicle.
The police have the right to stop your car to check documents. Stay calm, show your papers, and if needed, call us — we are available 24/7.
Speed Limits
- 50 km/h in populated areas; in residential zones and near schools often 20–30 km/h.
- 90 km/h outside populated areas.
- 110 km/h on roads with a dividing lane.
- 130 km/h on highways.
Automatic speed cameras are installed at city entrances and on highways. The fine is sent to the vehicle owner — us — and we forward it to the renter with a $10 service fee.
What Is Prohibited
- Alcohol while driving: zero tolerance. Fines start at 17,000 UAH and include license suspension.
- Holding a phone while driving. Use a holder and hands-free devices.
- Running a red light and speeding over 50 km/h: heavy fines and possible license confiscation.
- Seat belts are mandatory for everyone; children under 145 cm must use a child safety seat.
Lights, Tires, Winter
From October 1 to May 1, low beam headlights must be on during the day outside populated areas. Winter tires are not legally required, but we fit them on all cars during the season. In the Carpathians, icy conditions are possible in winter: keep a safe distance and do not turn off ESP.
Martial Law: Curfew and Air Raid Alerts
Most regions have a curfew during nighttime hours. Check the current schedule for your route with your manager before traveling at night: movement during curfew without a special permit is prohibited. During air raid alerts, stop in a safe place and avoid parking near bridges and infrastructure facilities. Install the “Air Alarm” app — it has an English interface.
Where You Cannot Drive
Driving a rental car into occupied territories or active combat zones is prohibited. Routes to the west and center of the country, including Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, and the Carpathians, are normal. If you’re unsure about a specific road, contact us and we’ll suggest a safe option.
If Something Happens
In case of an accident: turn on hazard lights, place a warning triangle, call us and dial 102. Do not sign anything without our approval. If the car breaks down, we will arrange a tow truck and provide a replacement vehicle of the same class. All this is included in the rental price.
