Car Rental in Ukraine During Martial Law: A Checklist for Foreign Visitors
Life in Kyiv and western Ukraine continues at a normal pace, and car rental operates as usual. However, a few things differ from peacetime. Here’s what you need to know.
How to Get There
Airports in Ukraine are not operating. The most convenient way is by train from Poland: daily trains, including night trains, run from Przemyśl or Warsaw to Kyiv. We deliver the car to Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi train station free of charge: just provide your train number, and a manager will meet you on the platform.
Documents
- International passport.
- Driver’s license in Latin script or an international driving permit.
- Bank card for the deposit.
No additional documents are required for foreigners. The rental agreement serves as your authorization to drive the car.
Curfew
Each region has its own schedule for nighttime movement restrictions. During curfew hours, travel is only allowed with a special permit, so plan intercity trips during the day. Before traveling at night, check with your manager about the current curfew hours on your route.
Air Raid Alerts
Install the “Air Raid Alert” app with an English interface. If an alert sounds while you’re on the road, stop in a safe place away from bridges, gas stations, and infrastructure, or go down to the nearest shelter if you are in a city.
Where You Can Travel
Western and central Ukraine, Kyiv, Odesa, and the Carpathians are usual routes. It is forbidden to travel to occupied territories and active combat zones; traveling to frontline regions is not recommended. Crossing the border into European countries is possible with prior arrangement: we prepare a Green Card and power of attorney.
Insurance
Comprehensive (КАСКО) and third-party liability (ОСЦПВ) insurance are included in the price. The renter’s liability is limited to the deposit amount. Damage caused by military actions is a separate category—discuss it with your manager before your trip.
Fuel and Money
Fuel is available at gas stations without restrictions, and cards are accepted everywhere. Prices on the website are in US dollars; payment can be made by card or cash in hryvnias. Currency exchange offices and ATMs operate normally.
Communication
Buy a local SIM card at the train station or any mobile store: internet is cheap and works almost everywhere. Our manager is available 24/7 via Telegram, Viber, and WhatsApp.
