Kyiv to Lviv by Rental Car: Route, Travel Time, and Where to Stop
The road from Kyiv to Lviv is the most popular intercity route among our clients. The M-06 (E40) highway is in good condition, and there are plenty of sights to see along the way.
Time and Distance
About 540 km and 6.5–7.5 hours of pure driving time depending on traffic when leaving Kyiv. With stops, plan for 8–9 hours. There are no toll roads in Ukraine.
When to Depart
Leave at 6–7 a.m.: you’ll avoid Kyiv’s traffic jams and arrive in Lviv during the day. Remember the curfew: night driving is prohibited, so leaving in the evening without extra time is a bad idea. Check the current schedule with your manager.
Route and Stops
- Zhytomyr (140 km). Coffee and the Korolyov Cosmonautics Museum.
- Zviahel (220 km). Convenient gas station and a café on the highway.
- Rivne (330 km). Lunch. 25 km from the city is the Tunnel of Love in Klevan.
- Dubno (370 km). A 15th-century castle right by the highway.
- Brody (420 km). About an hour left to Lviv.
Fuel Stations and Connectivity
Major gas station chains appear every 30–50 km: OKKO, WOG, SOCAR. They accept cards. Mobile internet is available almost along the entire route. Google Maps and Waze navigation work reliably.
In Lviv
The historic center is a restricted traffic zone; park on the outskirts at paid parking lots via an app or at your hotel. From there, it’s convenient to continue your journey to the Carpathians: Bukovel is another 250 km away.
What to Consider with a Rental Car
The standard limit is 300 km per day: a two-day Kyiv–Lviv–Kyiv trip usually fits within this. For longer routes, add the “Unlimited Mileage” option (starting at $40 per rental depending on the car class).
