Weekend Route: Kyiv — Carpathians by Rental Car
The Carpathians are the most popular destination among Apex Rent Car clients from May to October. In three days, you can visit Lviv, drive along mountain switchbacks, ascend Bukovel, and return to Kyiv without rushing. We share a route we've driven several times ourselves, with real expense figures.
Which Car to Choose
For the Carpathians, we recommend a crossover with all-wheel drive: Range Rover Velar, BMW X5, or Audi Q7 for $125–145 per day when renting for a week. In summer, you can also go with a Volkswagen T-Cross for $28, but on dirt roads to the mountain meadows and after rain, all-wheel drive and 20 cm ground clearance give confidence. A minivan suits a family with children and lots of luggage, while a company seeking thrills should opt for the BMW X5 from the business-class fleet.
The total route length is about 1500 km, meaning a rate with a 300 km daily limit for 3 days covers 900 km. Either add unlimited mileage or rent the car for 5 days: the 4–9 day rate is cheaper per day, giving you extra time.
Day 1: Kyiv — Lviv, 540 km
Depart at 7 a.m. via the M06 highway through Zhytomyr and Rivne. The road is good, about 6–7 hours including a coffee stop in Novograd-Volynskyi. In Lviv, park near your hotel and explore the city center on foot: Rynok Square, Armenian Street, and cozy cafes. Dinner in the old town costs about $15–25 per person.
Day 2: Lviv — Bukovel — Yaremche, 280 km
Through Stryi and Dolyna to Yaremche — 4 hours with photo stops. From Yaremche to Bukovel is another 30 km along a mountain road. In summer, the Bukovel lift operates, offering views of Hoverla; a ticket costs about $10. Spend the night in Yaremche: local guesthouses offer rooms for $30–50 with homemade breakfast.
Day 3: Yaremche — Kyiv, 640 km
In the morning, walk to the Probiy waterfall, a 15-minute walk from Yaremche center, and visit the souvenir market. Leave no later than 11:00 a.m.: the route via Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, and Khmelnytskyi on highways M12 and M06 takes 8–9 hours with lunch in Ternopil. Fuel and Other Expenses
- Fuel: 1500 km at 7 l/100 km consumption — about 105 liters, costing $150–160 at current A-95 gasoline prices.

- Parking in central Lviv — $3–5 per day, usually free at guesthouses in Yaremche.

Tips Before Departure
Check the mountain weather forecast: even in July, fog and rain can occur at passes. Refuel at major network gas stations along the highway, not in villages. Use engine braking on descents in the mountains instead of the pedal. Keep distance on switchbacks: glass and bumpers suffer most on mountain roads.
